the sweet look of newborn simplicity…we all love it. the pure innocence of a baby. wrap that baby in some neutral colored linens and that baby cuteness factor just amplified by about 20 billion points!when planning newborn sessions with my clients, especially the in home newborn sessions…i always try to prepare them for a slow and easy going session. this is not a 15 minute session that you hop out of the car for, get a few portraits made and wait 3 weeks for the gallery.
this type of session is in your home, it is relaxed, it is slow, and it is so rewarding!
having pictures of your newborn in your home automatically means…you prints and canvases will match your house!!! it’s a win win 🙂 plus, you don’t have to pack thirty bags to come to a studio.
i try to convince each of my new mommies that they want a simple, clean and elegant newborn session. this means neutral colors, clean and fresh looking linens, no crazy patterns…although sometimes, there is a place for that!
newborns are so sweet and precious in their purest and simplest form…why complicate that with crazy props, wild colored blankets and things that pull your eye away from their plump little selves?
here are some tips for your simple newborn session
1} have a few wraps handy
we love wraps! especially the muslin blankets from Target…those are so soft and they’re the perfect length!
2} accessorize, lightly 🙂
i’m all for cute headbands, crazy hats and fluffy fru-fru outfits…but a simple newborn session needs simple accessories. maybe dad’s old teddy bear, moms baby blanket, etc.
3} light!
we need natural and pure light. i supplement light when needed, but if we’re in a brightly lit room {windows are a must}…there is no need to supplement that light 🙂 natural lights gives babies, and mommies that perfect and natural look.
4} plan for them to eat
they will eat more often in our two hour time frame than a normal newborn eats in 5 hours. it just happens. we’re moving them a lot, they are getting diaper changes, a stranger is around, etc. this is all new for them…so their basic instinct is to eat and they will eat a lot!!!
5} have a family member there
have a family member there to watch older siblings if there are any. we suggest your mom or your sister. someone the child is comfortable with and would do anything for…because 10 times out of 10 🙂 we will have to bribe them into pictures with their new sibling!!!!
