do you remember looking through a family album with your parents? it was probably pictures of your grandparents, when they were your parents’ age…the pictures were starting to fall out of the album, the sticky photo corners were adhering to the opposite page making each page more and more difficult to turn. do you remember the feelings you had when you were able to take that photo out of the album and actually hold it in your hands. i remember this. i also remember my grandmothers having boxes full of photographs. some blurry, some with terrible lighting…but guess what, they were memories 🙂 and i still love looking through them.
back then, they didn’t have digital cameras readily accessible. they had film cameras, disposable film cameras and polaroids!!! things got recorded permanently! you couldn’t hit delete. those memories will live on.
my favorite thing about those old photographs, is the color. the colors are true colors!!! and this is why i love film. it is a vibrant, classic and timeless way to record your life story 🙂 through the timeless look of film.if you haven’t figured it out…i love to shoot film 🙂 i love the sound a film camera makes, i love that you have no idea what the photograph looks like until you get it processed and receive it back weeks later. i love that you can’t redo the photo…and i love that it is getting printed.
film has a beautiful and timeless feel to it. some of the world’s leading wedding photographers either shoot 100% film or they’re hybrid shooters. hybrid means they shoot a mixture of digital and film. but you can ask any hybrid shooter which medium they prefer, and they’ll say film!!!
film takes a little patience. you have to meter your light and figure out how you want your portrait to look before you take it. do you want it contrasty, muted, overexposed, etc. you have to have a vision before you ever click the shutter. but when you do…that sound, is like angels singing.
i remember the first time i sent my film off to a professional lab. not walgreens… 🙂 i was so excited to get it back. i also remember the feeling i had when i checked my email and it was the email containing my film scans!!! i remember scrolling through and instantly falling in love. even the blurry pictures {i used a manual focus lens with a 1.5 year old subject!} were so special to me. i loved them then and i love them now.
i cannot wait to incorporate more film into my work and actually shoot mainly film 🙂
